It's also usually when we're in our last year of high school which usually means moving out of our parent's house to go to college.
Basically, by the time an American child is eighteen, you're expected to be able to take care of themselves. You don't have to, mind you, but if the need so arises, you can.
But then you have worlds like this where this obviously isn't the case. I mean, hell they kick kids out the door at age ten and expect them to be able to take care of themselves out on the road. Even on Earth, this isn't an overall standard. Some groups consider sixteen year olds to be adults.
