[John seems somehow distracted when he turns on the video today. He's sitting at the kitchen table in his house, chin propped in his hand and eyes on a Pokéball he's rolling idly on the table in front of him.]

You ever wonder what it is that determines what happens to a Pokémon after its trainer goes back home? I mean, I've thought about it before but never really thought about it if that makes any sense? This is really the first time I've inherited one that wasn't from a friend so it just got me thinking.

Granted, it originally belonged to someone who was... [He pauses, seeming almost hesitant to finish that sentence. Or perhaps unsure of how he wants to end it.] ...a friend. At...one point in time... [He trails off, brow furrowing as he stops rolling the ball around.] So maybe it has less to do with Eridan and more to do with her.

[He leans his chair back on two legs, picking the ball up and passing it back and forth between his hands, finally looking at the camera.]

So yeah. Anybody have any good conspiracy theories on the matter? I'm curious.

Oh! I thought you meant... [He frowns.] Actually, I'm not sure what I thought you meant but anyway, that could be. They're pretty in-tune to our moods and our desires, or the ones that like us at least.

what did you manifest?
all the stuff i could do was just powers i used to have back home.

because we died.
or uh...not-died? i guess that clause still held true even in...wherever we were.
because i SHOULD have died, but instead i just blacked out and woke up shackled in the dungeon but otherwise completely fine.
no stab wounds or anything.
then naegi just kinda...showed up a little bit later in much the same predicament.
only apparently he got mauled by bears instead of stabbed.

but yeah, basically.
from the sounds of things, the monsters changed shape depending on who was looking at them?
found that out when i ran into my friend shaun.
we both saw two completely different things but we were both looking at the same monster.
his guess was that they took the form of whatever they thought would scare us most.
not sure if that's actually how they worked but it wasn't a bad little theory, in my opinion.

[Mental note: Don't ever let John swing his fists again. Pain shoots through Dave at the same time the air rushes out of his lungs. He bends with the hit trying to lessen the impact but John is still crazy as shit strong.

He's pretty sure he can't take too many more hits from his best friend. Not if he wants to have a shred of a chance. Dave winces as he takes a stuttered breath and immediately leaps back to put distance between them. God damn.]

H-holy shit. [Reassessment. John is slower than he is. He circles warily like a cat trying to find the right angle to pounce from. His abs have taken really bad hits before moving through the pain is the only way to get through it. He makes a hand signal in the classic bring it to see if he can taunt John into coming at him.]

They pull less of an attitude with you than Weapons, so there's that.

If what you've said is true, I don't know if it's a role I'm altogether happy with.

But I suppose it's fair to say we're close.

Well, I've also seen people who weren't dangerously insane before end up that way somehow - the sort of thing where they normally would have been fine, but they had some sort of...incident, I guess you'd call it.

[He twitches a little once that's out there, though, because it occurs to him that that...isn't necessarily limited to the girls, is it? Just. Give him a moment, hang on.]

But in general, I've found girls to be more difficult to relate to than boys, insane or not - in the school I was attending back home, there was at least one I knew that was strange to the point that I'm not sure how people talked to her in the first place, and many of them tend to be either entirely too open or completely closed off. It's...strange.

The more simple one is, the better they understand the desires of the heart. As humans we have made ourselves complex, and thus those whispers are often unheard. Animals, and even pokemon, have only the most basic needs and desires... I do not doubt that they are more in-tune with such things.

the bears thing, i mean.
because i don't see how it could have been. i mean the powers thing didn't kick in till we were all downstairs.

and those things were pretty persistent and deadly!
i mean i was with rose AND dave and they still got me.
so...don't beat yourself up over it, i guess is what i'm trying to say here.

Well some of them do, anyway. You'd be surprised at how good some of them are at that, even if they can't actually talk. My Umbreon has been giving me attitude since the night he hatch, pretty much. At least that finally stopped after last month though...

No. The bears weren't my fault.

But the bears and the grant of responsibility for Naegi-kun's safety both suggest that this place was somehow relying on information that I'm not altogether comfortable with it having.

so...basically kinda like how kids are more in tune to that sort of thing too?
i can sorta see that, yeah.
though i don't know if i'd say it's because they're simple.
not really sure what i would say instead though so maybe you actually have hit the nail right on the head and i'm just worrying too much about wording.
they do have less to worry about, now that i think on it a little more...
simple just almost makes it sound like we're better than they are which i don't think is the case and maybe wasn't what you were implying at all.

I uh...did until recently. Thankfully though, that seems to be a thing of the past now.

[Well he said don't hold back!!! Dave really has nobody to blame for this other than himself. John keeps his eyes on Dave, moving his head and twisting his torso when necessary to watch him as he circles, but otherwise remaining still.]

[At least until Dave pretty much invites him to come at him. Of course he's going to go for that. What do you think he is, chicken? He's pretty sure if Dave weren't slightly winded right now, there'd be words to that taunt.]

[John wait until Dave circles around to the front again nd then springs forward, rushing towards the blond as fast as he can. Which is...faster than he used to be, admittedly, but no faster than Dave has seen him move before. And still pretty slow, especially considering he can't use the wind to help him out in that regard. His left hand is balled into a fist again, and it's probably all too easy for Dave to tell that John's aiming for the same spot again. Because Dave's already winded. If John hits him there again, maybe he won't be able to jump back as fast which will give John the upper hand.]

but then again, i can't really say that's happened to me much?
i mean there was that outfit in my bag but that's really the only thing i can think of that falls in that category.
or well...i guess some of those mystery eggs i've gotten sort of do as well?
but even then, it always just seems like more of a funny coincidence than anything.
but that might just be because the information in question isn't stuff that makes me uncomfortable.

i mean it's not really all that big of a secret that i'm kind of...a nerd. i mean if i am being completely honest with myself, that's the truth right there.
so getting super nerd clothes, while kind of HAHA REAL FUNNY isn't particularly unnerving.
nor is getting an egg containing a pokemon with a reputation as a trickster, that just so happens to have a shiny form that kind of

like her horns are the same color as my eyes, instead of green and she's black instead of brown. my hair is black.

and matching ghost squid eggs with rose on valentine's day was the same sort of deal.
though i'm not sure if that counts since like...rose and i weren't dating back home or anything like that. but she likes tentacles and i like ghosts so...

anyway, tl;dr, most of the stuff that's happened to me like that has been based off of my interests or other little mundane things like that.
so it never really bothered me, personally.
even with the monsters in the castle, one could argue that that was our own doing, rather than someone/thing knowing more than it should.

[Okay, there's plenty to address there but Kirigiri's just going to take a minute to zero in on what is clearly the most important.]

Oh well yeah, that sort of thing is a littler different though. A single terrible incident like that can happen to anybody. I mean, look at Batman. Actually, that was probably a terrible example because he's a good guy so like...that's the complete opposite of what we were just talking about.

[Good job, John. Just keep adding to the pile of weird statements that were better left unsaid.]

Anyway, yeah. Just in general I think there's something about girls' brains that are wired a little differently than boys. I mean not in the sense that they're incapable, dumb, weak, or anything like that I mean it more like in a social sense? Like you said, it's just harder for boys to relate to them right off the bat. In most cases, anyway.
