prank #48 | video

[John seems somehow distracted when he turns on the video today. He's sitting at the kitchen table in his house, chin propped in his hand and eyes on a Pokéball he's rolling idly on the table in front of him.]

You ever wonder what it is that determines what happens to a Pokémon after its trainer goes back home? I mean, I've thought about it before but never really thought about it if that makes any sense? This is really the first time I've inherited one that wasn't from a friend so it just got me thinking.

Granted, it originally belonged to someone who was... [He pauses, seeming almost hesitant to finish that sentence. Or perhaps unsure of how he wants to end it.] ...a friend. At...one point in time... [He trails off, brow furrowing as he stops rolling the ball around.] So maybe it has less to do with Eridan and more to do with her.

[He leans his chair back on two legs, picking the ball up and passing it back and forth between his hands, finally looking at the camera.]

So yeah. Anybody have any good conspiracy theories on the matter? I'm curious.

It may be simply chance meeting in many cases as the monsters wander to make their own way, or perhaps they seek out others that their trainer had a connection with.

Or perhaps there's a random distribution system set up to ensure that not all homeless monsters stay so.

Those who have left and returned have started with a new set of pokemon, so it is curious to see if they will run into their old ones at some point.

They're smarter than most people seem to give them credit for. They may well know where they will be most appreciated or cared for, if they come of their own volition.

[That's a bit more sentimental than he'd usually get, but there is a kernel of truth to it that he won't deny.]

How fascinating... I wonder how they know, or if they remember... or is that also just random chance of paths crossing? It's quite fascinating to think about...

It's quite possible. They rely on other senses above our own... scent and sound, to say the least. There are myriad ways of remembering one when the mind itself falters.

The bonds of the heart cannot be denied. If one has touched the heart of another, even if there is distance between them they will ever be connected.

[Trite, the sappy sentimentality of the lightbearers. Still an undeniable truth... one he's put to his own use.]

[no, John, no... light cooties nooo]

The more simple one is, the better they understand the desires of the heart. As humans we have made ourselves complex, and thus those whispers are often unheard. Animals, and even pokemon, have only the most basic needs and desires... I do not doubt that they are more in-tune with such things.

By 'simple' I mean that they are concerned with their natural needs. Food, shelter, to be cared for, to protect. Some perhaps require intellectual stimulation of sorts. But they do not fret about things that are not in those general categories of need. They do not worry about apparel, or money, or work, or other such things. They live a simpler existence because they can be more natural. To live like humanoids is to make one's life complex with needs and desires and ways of living.

Do not worry about it. Perhaps I did not phrase it clearly enough initially.

We do, but there is little that can be done about that. For one to abandon everything and attempt to go back to the ways of our ancestors is a difficult prospect indeed. One could say that when we gained opposible thumbs we began to leave that simple life behind.
