So did anybody know that it's possible for Pokémon to be deaf?

[While John looks more or less fine, when he speaks there's a definite sort of half-squeaky grogginess to his voice that suggests he's only just recently gotten it back. Someone was pretty damn sick over New Year's (on his deathbed, one would think, the way he carried on) and has only just recently gotten over it. But at least his nose finally stopped running and he's done coughing. His lost voice just has yet to find its way back to him entirely.]

[He's sitting on the floor of his living room, leaning back against the couch. He's not looking at the camera, though. Instead, he's smiling somewhat fondly at a cheerful-looking Gothita playing with a squiddle doll a few feet away from him. She's chewing on one of the tentacles, giggling a little with her back to John.]

I feel like it really shouldn't be so surprising. I just never really stopped to think about it being a Thing That Could Happen, you know? [He turns his attention to the camera, finally.]

Anyway, so how was everyone's New Year? I missed ringing it in, myself.

[Time to play catch-up since he's been out of the loop for like a week now and fuck checking all the network backlog.]

It's a mystery! I've read about the same thing happening with dogs and perhaps even horses--all born white, all born deaf or with some other complication.

...weird, I have never heard that before. I assume you mean like...normal animals. Back on Earth, yeah? Is it some kind of weird form of albinism?

Oh--right! _{[He laughs as he imagines John picturing white ghost horses and white ghost cats and being very confused.]} On Earth--living animals.

And that, I can't be sure, but I do remember the cats I met having blue eyes...

Huh. I'll have to ask Rose if she knows anything about that. She knows a bit about cats.

Maybe not then, since albinos have pink eyes...

Tell me what you find out. Now you've got me thinking about it. I wonder if it's harder to spot in Pokemon since they don't seem to have that many color variations.

Will do. And yeah. I always kind of wondered why the shinies are all like...the same from species to species but they don't all match? You know, like how all albinos are missing their pigment no matter what kind of animal they are. But shinies are all so random.

[He shrugs.]

I dunno, I just always thought it was kind of weird. But then again, we don't even know what causes a shiny in the first place. I'm assuming it's something genetic since they seem to be able to pass it down on occasion, but....

_{[Now Jack's mindgears are turning.]}

I may have to pay a visit to the Goldenrod library. Now I'm curious. I have a shiny Arbok myself. This world loves throwing new mysteries at us.

Oh? What color is shiny Arbok? I like seeing how they differ, it's kinda neat, you know?

[John has somehow managed to amass a stupid number of shinies. Probably because people keep leaving them to him.]

She's a brilliant gold! I wasn't expecting that since as an Ekans, she was more of a green color.

Oooo, so one of those ones that changes drastically with evolution then? My Whimsicott was the same way. She was gold as a Cottonee but now she's black and blue.

She sounds gorgeous though.

_{[Jack is currently at home and gets up from his kitchen table, awkwardly jostling the camera as he searches his mansion.]}

Noose! You're wanted on the network! I'm sure she's around somewhere.

[Wow that name isn't morbid at all, Jack.]

_{[He angles the 'gear upward to reveal a giant golden cobra piled up on top of an expensive looking bookshelf. There wasn't really enough space for her, but Noose didn't seem to care.]}

Look at that. Noose, you lazy old thing, come here.

_{[He reaches up with one arm and tries to drag her down so that John can see her face. She lets out a deep hiss and contracts her coils, trapping his hand within them.]}

Oh...

[Jack is that really all you have to say about your HAND BEING STUCK IN A COBRA'S COILS?? Just the most nonchalant of 'oh's?]

[Halloween Town Residents, jeez.]

Uh...everything okay there?

_{[Jack is rather glad the camera is pointed at Noose's coils instead of the grim wobbly line his mouth has become.]}

I guess she's grumpy. I must have woken her up. Can I have that back?

Haha, oops!

[Jack don't get your hand bitten off or something.]

_{[Jack keeps tugging on his arm, his dismay slipping into his voice.]}

John, how about I-- I'll have to call you back. Later. I've got to do...something's come up--_{let go. You are being so bad.}

[He's trying not to laugh. Really, he is. It's mostly working.]

Alright, Jack. I'll talk to you later. It was uh...very nice meeting you, Noose! You are very pretty. [If not slightly misbehaved.]
