[Judging by the dim light, it's well into sunset by now and John's laying on a lounge chair on what can only be the deck of the S.S. Anne. On his chest lays a small Dunsparce, wearing a tiny and absolutely adorable light blue party hat. John's idly petting its back, eliciting a few content sighs from the little snake every now and again.]

I know we have a starter appreciation day, but there's nothing quite like the anniversary of your arrival to get you thinking about the Pokémon that started it all. Like really think about them, I mean. Not just kind of acknowledging that they were your first Pokémon.

Or maybe I am just sentimental, who knows. But I really think there's something kind of special about starters. Even if there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why you were paired up together. Either way, Colonel Sassacre here and I have been together three years as of today. [The Dunsparce flitters his wings a little, maybe giving the camera the smallest of smiles.] Though it feels like it's been way longer than that, honestly. Time flies when you're having fun, right?

[He beams at the camera.]

So tell me about your starters. What was yours? What sort of things have you done together? I dunno, just brag about them if you want. Or we can just talk about whatever, you know I am honestly not too picky. There's just only so long I can appreciate complete silence, personally. But this chair is way too comfy and the breeze feels way too nice to go back inside.

[He's feeling chatty again, apparently. And also lazy. Though what else is new on either of those fronts, really?]

On that note, if you haven't done the elite battle with Blue or Claire to get your S.S. Anne pass, I highly recommend doing so. Just saying. Totally worth it.

Can you really blame her though? [He chuckles a little.] She really must care for you a lot if she's doing something like that.

Though it's always a little funny to hear about really cute Pokémon doing that. My Whimsicott is the same way. I fell into a coma for a month the day she hatched and she's never quite forgiven me for that. In the sense that she thinks I need constant supervision and protection because of it.

On that exact day? No wonder; sleeping humans do look particularly vulnerable, especially compared to what was surely a very strong Cottonee. How could she know that you can take care of yourself?

Yeah, that exact day. Like within twenty minutes, it kinda sucked for everybody involved.

[Though John probably got off easy, all he had to do was lay there.]

I get why she does it, it's still just kinda funny because she's just this...adorable little fluffy thing, you know? But I am touched to know she cares that much.

[Pokémon are the best thing. The Best.]

From my experience, the adorable little fluffy ones are the most likely to be overly protective or combative. Perhaps that is their way of compensating for their less than intimidating appearance.

Does Rosie ever try and look intimidating? Like put on a stern face or something. Can Clefables puff up? They look pretty puffy. [A beat.] Assuming she actually is a Clefable?

[I mean he said Cleffa but that doesn't confirm if we have full evolution here.]

She's a Clefable indeed, and the word 'try' is completely unnecessary. To the rest of the team, she's the older sister they'd better not cross, for her anger is terrifying to behold.

Hehehe, I see. And it always makes me glad to hear other people referring to their Pokémon as families.

I could hardly not do so. Not only do they treat each other as siblings, but I also have four parent-child groups.

[Which, of course, makes him the dad/grandpa.]

Hehe, it's the same with some of mine. And my fiancée's roster too, they've kind of basically just merged into one giant Pokéfamily. It's kinda nice.

It is, though it becomes quite painful to think about when you take breeding partners into consideration. I'm merely glad that Nika and Zira completely refuse to consider it, truly.
