[Judging by the dim light, it's well into sunset by now and John's laying on a lounge chair on what can only be the deck of the S.S. Anne. On his chest lays a small Dunsparce, wearing a tiny and absolutely adorable light blue party hat. John's idly petting its back, eliciting a few content sighs from the little snake every now and again.]

I know we have a starter appreciation day, but there's nothing quite like the anniversary of your arrival to get you thinking about the Pokémon that started it all. Like really think about them, I mean. Not just kind of acknowledging that they were your first Pokémon.

Or maybe I am just sentimental, who knows. But I really think there's something kind of special about starters. Even if there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why you were paired up together. Either way, Colonel Sassacre here and I have been together three years as of today. [The Dunsparce flitters his wings a little, maybe giving the camera the smallest of smiles.] Though it feels like it's been way longer than that, honestly. Time flies when you're having fun, right?

[He beams at the camera.]

So tell me about your starters. What was yours? What sort of things have you done together? I dunno, just brag about them if you want. Or we can just talk about whatever, you know I am honestly not too picky. There's just only so long I can appreciate complete silence, personally. But this chair is way too comfy and the breeze feels way too nice to go back inside.

[He's feeling chatty again, apparently. And also lazy. Though what else is new on either of those fronts, really?]

On that note, if you haven't done the elite battle with Blue or Claire to get your S.S. Anne pass, I highly recommend doing so. Just saying. Totally worth it.

My starters, huh...

I haven't really got any fond memories of these guys yet. Unless a big Torkoal eating your cigarettes counts as "fond". My real memories are with my first starters, from the first time I was here. Can't really forget those times.

Oh, you were here once before, Snake? [And you remember it? Wow congrats you are like the fifth person John has encountered who has pulled this off.] What was it last time?

Well... The last time it was an egg. It hatched into a Togepi. I named her Sunny.

[ Good times. ] She's a Togekiss now, and she's with a friend of mine.

Wow, more people start with Togepi than I thought.

[THIS IS THE THIRD ONE TODAY.]

It's good she wound up with a friend after you left though. Sometimes I think that's harder than the Pokémon than it is the people who are still here.

[ He nods his head slowly, looking a bit downcast. ]

Not sure what would have happened to the rest of my team, aside from the ones I gave away. Do they just... cease to exist? Get released?

Sometimes I think I don't deserve to come back if they don't get that same chance.

[OH NO SNAKE THAT'S SAD. NO.]

Well...I am no expert, but I'm pretty sure it's the latter. I have a friend who was gone for nearly two years. Some of her old Pokémon managed to find their way back to her from the wild so...

I would bet yours are all still around. Maybe they just haven't realized you're back yet.

So somewhere out there, there's a level 100 Steelix roaming the wildnerness, huh? Kind of scary to imagine.

...yeah, just a little. Maybe it's hiding out in one of the caves.

[That...makes it slightly less scary, maybe???]

Probably training all the younger kids with some of the tactics I taught him.

I'm going to be wary of every single Onix I cross in a cave now thanks to you.

[Because, frankly, when you use the words TACTICS to describe something, it's obviously some hardcore shit.]

Well, he was a Steelix last I saw him, but he's probably been training some Onix, then.

Maybe you should catch one. They're probably my favorite Pokemon, if I had to choose.

Oh? Why's that?

[Onix is not one that he...honestly hears people say much about at all. Favorite or otherwise.]

They're big and sturdy... Not to mention reliable. Not bad for catching a lift on, too, if you need to get around and don't have any Pokemon that know FLY.

The only situation I wouldn't trust an Onix in would be at a beach.

Because they sink in the sand?

...Nnooo... because of the water.

...oh. Haha, right oh my god. [He smacks himself in the forehead.] Duh!

[HOLY SHIT THAT WAS DUMB WHAT WAS HE THINKING?]

I always think of sand before I think of water when someone says the word beach. Hahaha...wow.

Depends what you go to the beach for, I guess.
