[Judging by the dim light, it's well into sunset by now and John's laying on a lounge chair on what can only be the deck of the S.S. Anne. On his chest lays a small Dunsparce, wearing a tiny and absolutely adorable light blue party hat. John's idly petting its back, eliciting a few content sighs from the little snake every now and again.]

I know we have a starter appreciation day, but there's nothing quite like the anniversary of your arrival to get you thinking about the Pokémon that started it all. Like really think about them, I mean. Not just kind of acknowledging that they were your first Pokémon.

Or maybe I am just sentimental, who knows. But I really think there's something kind of special about starters. Even if there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why you were paired up together. Either way, Colonel Sassacre here and I have been together three years as of today. [The Dunsparce flitters his wings a little, maybe giving the camera the smallest of smiles.] Though it feels like it's been way longer than that, honestly. Time flies when you're having fun, right?

[He beams at the camera.]

So tell me about your starters. What was yours? What sort of things have you done together? I dunno, just brag about them if you want. Or we can just talk about whatever, you know I am honestly not too picky. There's just only so long I can appreciate complete silence, personally. But this chair is way too comfy and the breeze feels way too nice to go back inside.

[He's feeling chatty again, apparently. And also lazy. Though what else is new on either of those fronts, really?]

On that note, if you haven't done the elite battle with Blue or Claire to get your S.S. Anne pass, I highly recommend doing so. Just saying. Totally worth it.

[Hey, at least John isn't giving Yusuke shit over it! If he were, there would be... a situation. Or at least, there would be after Yusuke finished huffing and puffing and blowing steam like a flustered, pissed off tea kettle. Ah, the trials and tribulations of being a hotheaded dimwit.]

I dunno. I mean - [Yusuke shrugs.] I guess it all started to change back when we were on Route 29. Some Heracross got pissed off at me for kicking her tree and attacked me, but before she could do any real damage, Puu here came flyin' in outta nowhere and pecked the shit out of her.

[Yusuke smiles a little, despite himself.]

Kinda hard not to appreciate something ballsy enough to take on something a lot bigger'n him just to save your ass.

[Luckily, John happens to like Altarias and has one of his own. It's not exactly one he would guess a guy like Yusuke would have (he was honestly expecting a fighting type or a ghost from everything they've talked about) but hey, that's how it works sometimes. Starters a weird, man.]

[And that story is heartwarming. See, this is why Swablus/Altarias are great. What good Pokémon.]

[All Pokémon are great.]

Awww, yeah for real man. That's one brave little Swablu. Oh, oh. Did he ever do the hat thing? [He points to the top of his head with both hands.] Liv used to do it a lot before she evolved.

[Yusuke groans.]

Yes. It was a pain in my ass, too. I was always afraid he was gonna do somethin' shitty like... well, like take a shit there.

[... which would've made his name apt in more ways than one, but would've probably resulted in him getting fried and battered and fed to a dog. Good thing he never dared.]

He also had this thing for cleaning. Still does, actually. I can't even leave a friggin' candy wrapper anywhere without him pitching a fit.

Ahaha...he didn't though, right?

I'm not sure if the same is true for Liv though that might just be because I tend to keep things pretty clean anyway. [He scratches his chin.] But now that you mention it, she's usually one of the ones that helps me tidy up the house.
