[He gives her hand a squeeze. Unfortunately, she doesn't get to hold it long because soon the coffee is done and John kind of needs both hands to manage the whole pouring into the cup thing.]

[Especially when it comes to Ms. Fancypants Lalonde and her half-coffee, half-creamer with a dash of caramel concoction. And for himself... straight black because that's how his dad drank it and dammit that's how he's going to drink it too. Even if he had to force himself to get used to the taste back on the ship.]

[After turning off the coffee put and putting the pot itself in the sink to fill it with water, he hands Rose her mug and takes up his own.]

So... couch, bed, table? We have options.

[Where would you like to sit, Rose?]

Mmm...couch. [[She thanks him when she takes the mug and takes a sip, sighing. She loved fresh, warm coffee.]]

Couch it is then! [He slips his free hand into hers, leading her gently away from the counter and over towards the couch.]

Now, you're the expert here so... should I pull a chair out of the kitchen and sit on that and let you lay on the couch or what? Hehehe.

Oh, jumping right into this are you? We haven't even gotten our clothes off yet. [[Cue an eyebrow wiggle.]]

[It's a good thing John wasn't drinking when she said that. It wouldn't have ended well no matter which way the coffee ended up going. Double luckily, he manages to keep a hand on his mug instead of sending it down to the floor where it could only end in a stained hotel rug.]

What?! I... what no! It was a joke about a therapy couch!! How did you get "let's get naked" out of that!?!

You said we had options before, listing the couch. The bed. And the table. Do you have any idea what you suggested?

[[Laughing, she turns and lays back on the couch.]] Nevermind, John. Grab a chair. Saddle up.

...wait you actually want to go along with that? [He looks mildly disappointed. He did say it was a joke after all.] I thought we could... you know... snuggle. Or something.

Aw baby. Come here. I was joking. [[She pats the couch, but doesn't move to get up just yet.]] I would rather snuggle with you too.

[John's frown quickly rights itself as he sets his coffee down on the coffee table and... stops to look at Rose laying on the couch like a lazy asshole. You're totally taking up all the room, girl.]

[He folds his arms over his chest and gives her a bemused look.]

You gonna sit up so we can do the cuddle thing or am I going to have to tickle you or something?

[[Fine fine she sits up, waiting for him to sit down.]]

No tickling necessary.

Darn. I will have to save these for another day! [He raises his hands into the air, wiggling long fingers a little bit. TICKLE HANDS. He picks his coffee cup up once more, taking a drink as he sits down right next to Rose.]

[[Before answering, she leans up against him, snuggling in close.]]

Good, me too. [He takes another drink.] Sooooo... penny for your thoughts?

Oh...um.

[[She sips at hers, staring at the liquid for a moment or two.]]

I've just been thinking about when I was younger.

Okaaaaay. Aaaaand...? [He rolls a hand in the air in front of him, urging her to go on.]

Aaaaaaaand...I was a pretty shitty daughter.

[He sets his coffee mug back down before settling back next to Rose and wrapping his arms around her.]

I think your mom would disagree with that, you know. And I do too. Sure, you did some shitty stuff just like I was kind of a shitty kid to my Dad a lot of the time. But that doesn't make you a shitty daughter and it doesn't make me a shitty son. It just makes us kids, Rose.

Mmm...sure doesn't feel that way.

Well that's just because you're being a Negative Nancy about it. Kids sometimes do shitty things to their parents, Rose. But they also do nice things for their parents too! And that includes you because I refuse to believe that you and your mom always had that whole passive aggressive thing going on.

It's just part of being a family, Rose. Sometimes you're shitty to each other. Especially when we get to be a certain age. Unfortunately you and I... [He trails off, staring at the ceiling for a moment before sighing and bumping his head gently against Rose's shoulder.]

Unfortunately you and I didn't get the chance to grow out of that phase on our own and apologize when we were older and wiser about the ways of the world and suitably disappointed in our teenage selves for being total asshats to the people who did nothing but support and love us all our lives.

[[Leaning her head against his in return, she nods a little. She knows he's right, but she still can't help feel like shit about it. Part of being family or not, she thinks she went too far sometimes. Yeah, John was a brat but...did he ever show his dad affection and not mean any of it? Was there ever a time where one of his hugs was meant to be a jab at his dad rather than an actual display of how much he loves him?

She honestly can't see John doing anything like that.]]

[John wraps an arm around her, nuzzling his cheek against her own.]

You have the chance to now though, you know. You could call her up right now and apologize, if you wanted.

I think I have before. Perhaps a few times. At least before I went back home for a while. I still can't help feeling guilty though...

I should make it up to her.
