[Hello Violet city. Having a nice day? Say, have you ever seen a seven foot tall ghost before? No? Well today's your lucky day then, because there's one (a Dusknoir to be exact) floating down the street this very moment. Should you happen to be walking toward this lazily floating spectre, you might not notice anything odd at first. Though if you look at its "collar" you'll see a set of human hands grasping each side of it.]

[Strange.]

[If you stand still and continue watching, letting the ghost float past you, however, the hands will make sense as you will be greeted with the following sight:]

[Yes, this is apparently the Dusknoir equivalent of a piggyback ride, and John is having the time of his life...even though it really isn't moving any faster than he could walk on his own. In fact, it might actually be moving slower.]

[Approach? He'll just be floating around for a while and doesn't appear to be too terribly busy.]

[Video Transmission; some time later...probably about 30 minutes to an hour.]

[When the feed clicks on, the image is very dark. Like, really dark. The only thing you can actually, sort-of see is John's face. And that's only because the dim light of the pokegear screen is reflecting off of his face. It's causing some major glare issues with his glasses, so you can't really see his eyes. However, he has what is quite possibly the biggest, most excited, grin ever on his face.]

Hey, did anyone know that the zig-zag pattern on Dusknoir's body is actually some kind of mouth? [A stifled, giggling noise.] Guess where I am right now?

[The feed clicks off.]

I...do? [Yeah guess who...kind of forgot about that IOU, Rose. There's a reason he never cashed in on it, and it's because Gamzee hit him with a rock.] But regardless, I really don't want to be stuck here another week. Besides, you don't really need the training. I'm pretty sure Halos could take out all three of his birds in one shot.

Yes, you do. Did you forget? [[Chuckling, she gently nudges him with her shoulder.]] And yes, I'm sure he easily could. I'm really not worried. I've been putting it off in favor of just...trying to stay cool I suppose.

No! I didn't forget. Just um... [Trying to think of a good excuse here.] ...okay, yeah I forgot. But it's not like I meant to, honest! I still don't really remember most of my birthday. [Unconsciously, he scratches at the back of his head a little. In the place where, if you were to shave his head, you would find a tiny white scar. Gamzee's birthday present.] It's all kind of fuzzy. But I really don't blame you. It's hard to find the motivation to do anything in this heat.

...you...don't? [[She's not offended or anything...she's kind of sad.]] Well...do you happen to remember the notes we passed back and forth?

That was...when we were sitting in the pokécenter, right? On opposite sides? [Here we go, all coming back to him now. Just needed a little prompting.] And then...yeah. Yeah I remember doing that. I just don't remember what any of the notes actually said.

...Ah. I see. [[Resting her head on his shoulder again, she falls quiet for a few moments.]]

...if you wanted to go back to the hotel, I...did save those. I mean...it's probably a pretty silly thing to be interested in, but if you were, I certainly wouldn't mind...er...yeah.

...You did?

[Excuse him while he is completely blown away by this revelation.]

[[And don't mind her while she just...tries to hide slightly against you, yup.]]

...yes. I did.

[He says nothing for a few minutes, still just trying to let that register. And once it finally does, John realizes something.]

[They weren't dating on his birthday.]

[That was kind of the only present he wanted and it wasn't until months later that he would actually get that present. So why would Rose...]

Oh...um. That's...not silly at all. And I would like to see them. I kind of feel bad that I can't really remember them. I started drawing little pictures on them at some point, didn't I? Or is my brain making that up or something?

[[Calming down considerably, she nods.]]

You did, yes. They were quite adorable. I certainly enjoyed receiving them. I attempted to draw you little things in return as well.

And don't feel bad, John. It's not your fault.

Pfftt. [Eyeroll.] I'm sure they were horrible, as always. You know I can't draw.

And I know it's not my fault but still. You seemed kind of upset about it.

[And he pretty much hates it when you're upset. Especially if it's because of something he did.]

Only a tad, John. And it wasn't so much that you forgot, as it was...well. I suppose it is that you forgot, but not because I am upset with you.

[[Rubbing her thumb along the side of his hand a little, she shrugs a bit.]]

It just...was kind of a special moment we shared. Or at least I feel it was. And it's a little sad that you don't have that memory...or not the full one.

And they were cute.

Oh...

[Now he feels even worse abou-- wait, hold on.]

Wait a second. You...thought that too?

The one about it...being a special moment. [John, stop mumbling. That's rude.]

Again. I did indeed. Enough to not only save the notes, but keep them in my journal.

[[And glance at them every now and then. But she won't admit to that much.]]

[Once again: excuse John while he is floored from shock. Because she keeps them in her journal and he knows Rose well enough to know that that's kind of a huge deal.]

Oh...wow. Okay, um. I'm not exactly sure what to say to that...

...Take your time.

[[Sighing, she shifts a bit to lean just a tad bit more against him, instead of just her head.]]

I don't think time will help me think of what to say to that. I mean, we weren't...dating back then.

[[Yup, she's going to let you piece this together on your own. Still not really feeling up to telling you how long she's been crushing on you.]]

But surely you can figure out what to say.

Okay. Well, I guess I'm really...touched? And my stomach is kind of doing this little flip-flop maneuver. So I'm...really, really happy to hear that you kept them. Especially that you kept them in such a special place.

[And that's the best you're going to get, Rose. He's not the best with words and isn't sure how to put it more ~elegantly~.]

But if we weren't dating then uh...why did you keep them? If you don't mind my asking, that is.

Well, I'm happy that you're happy.

[[Oh, that next question. Is one she should probably answer.]]

I don't mind you asking, John. There's very little I would ever mind you asking me. And...well, they're special to me. I treasure them. Because even though we weren't dating, I...really valued your companionship. [[That's right John. Not friendship, companionship.]]

They were nice little reminders...

And I'm happy that you're happy that I'm happy.

[Okay, now he's just being a little silly. But unfortunately, given Rose's usual manner of speaking, he's just taking the term "companionship" as a fancier term for "friendship." If she meant something more by that, he's missing it entirely.]

You still value our friendship though, right? I mean, we didn't stop being friends just because we're dating, right? We're still best friends, aren't we?

Of course we are John. That would never change, no matter what. Dating or otherwise.

[He is so very happy to hear this. There's another gigantic, near-face-cracking grin (that Rose probably can't even see) on his face as he gives her hand another squeeze.]

Good. I don't ever want it to change. Or the dating. I would really like for that that stay a thing for...well, ever, honestly.
