[For once, there is no smile on John's face when he turns on the video feed. Instead there is a look of tired, barely-restrained panic on his face. Also unusual are the stacks of books surrounding him. Someone went to the library. Someone found every book they could on ghosts and legends.]

[Someone stayed up all night reading all those books, and it definitely shows.]

[Barely visible on the couch behind him is a lavender-clad body laid out on the couch. The face isn't visible, but to anyone who knows her, the clothes should be recognizable as those of Rose Lalonde.]

Has... [His voice is the tiniest bit shaky. He's really trying his hardest to stay calm here.] Anyone figured anything out yet? About the people who were taken, I mean? And how to get them back? I talked to a few people about it last night but...heh, it's a different day now, right? [There's a very forced, weak laugh.] I read every book I could find...but they aren't telling me anything more than the pokédex did.

[It's a little late for "don't look in their backs."]

So...yeah. If anyone knows something, I would appreciate it.

[He gives the camera once last slightly desperate look before clicking it off.]

Uh, yeah, totally fair. Except you're lying, and you are tired.

Sleep with your head in your arms on the couch next to her, for all I care. But get some fucking sleep.

[He rolls his eyes.]

I'm telling you, I'm fine. And I'm not lying. Besides, you have been awake just as long as I have.

Yeah, well, I can't sleep until you do, John. Why do you think I'm telling you this? Just take a fucking nap.

I can't. It's not just that I'm not tired or I don't want to miss anything. I just...I can't sleep, Dave. I'm too wound up or stressed out or worried or something, fuck I don't even know what the reason is. I just can't

... Yeah... okay. I get it.

[ That's harder to argue with. Dave reaches beneath his shades to rub his eyes before actually taking them off, hanging his head for a second. Without looking up: ]

We can't both wear ourselves out like this. She'd call us both stupid if she could see us right now.

Hehe, yeah probably. Or ridiculous. She thinks that I am pretty ridiculous, apparently. She says it a lot.

[He laughs a little bit, though it's still not quite his normal laugh. It's not forced or anything it's just kinda...sad.]

Pretty and ridiculous, I'd wager.

[ He turns his head, resting it on his raised knees so he's facing John, but not really looking at him. His eyes are downcast, his lashes mostly obscuring them from John's view. ]

And you are pretty ridiculous.

Haha, what? Somehow I doubt she thinks I'm pretty. Can guys even be pretty?

[He looks over. Oh hey, when did you take your shades off, Dave? He hadn't even noticed because he was too busy staring at the floor/table/general area in front of him.]

And I am not ridiculous.

Sure they can. [ A noncommittal shrug. ] She'd probably call you 'cute,' though, you're right. Maybe if you ever grow into your teeth....

[ Now Dave looks tired, eyes half-closed and head laid down, expression somewhat less severe than usual. ]

Ack, stop putting words in my mouth, I didn't say "cute." Because that's definitely not true.

[And the only response to the teeth comment is John unconsciously hiding them inside his mouth. He really doesn't really mind his teeth until someone mentions them.]

[Don't think he doesn't notice that look though. Because he definitely can tell how tired you are now that the shades are out of the way. And he can't help but sigh.]

...If I go lay down next to you, will that be enough to help you fall asleep?

[ Dave's eyes flicker across the floor — he almost lifts them to look at John, but remembers at the last second that his shades are in his hand, not on his face. ]

Who knows. Maybe it'll help you sleep.

Heh, maybe. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

[He sits up, uncurling his legs and then pushing himself to his feet. Once standing, he stretches a little bit. Damn, had he really been sitting in that same position for so long? Ow.]

[ Dave takes a moment before he replaces his shades on his face and stands up, too, a touch more gracefully. He'd been up and moving more recently, after all.

He toes his shoes off and moves to flop unceremoniously on the bed, leaving enough room for John to lie down beside him, with little to spare. ]

[Dave, you don't even have to try to be more graceful than John. It really does not take much effort to do this.]

[Having removed his own shoes shortly after his trip to the library, he doesn't even have to pause before sliding into bed right next to Dave, lying on his back and staring up at the ceiling. He doesn't even bother taking off his glasses. Yep, he really intends to do some serious sleeping here.]

[ Well, no. Especially not when you're a ninja.

Dave lies in silence for a moment, staring up at the ceiling. He casts a sideways glance at John and watches him do the same for a few moments before sighing. ]

... We totally look like a married couple who just got in a fight and resolved never to have sex again.

[Awkward silence is just the best, isn't it? He]

Heh...I'm sorry. That was probably my fault, wasn't it? I really should have stopped with the "get in the kitchen and make me a sammich" jokes after the first time, should I? You know I still love you though, right?

[Yes, Dave. He is implying that you are the wife.]

[ Dave props himself on one elbow, his head on his fist as he looks at John, half-amused. ]

Sure. You could've just asked me to make you a sandwich. You know I would. ... Might have to fight me if you want me naked in an apron, though.

[ That's fine. Dave can roll with that. ]

[Oh...wow. Um. Okay, Dave.]

Oh? Is that a fact?

[He...has no good comebacks for that.]

[ Dave can tell John's been taken by surprise. Clearly a win for Strider. ]

Well, I don't just get naked on command.

[ He smacks John lightly in the chest, using the opportunity as an excuse to drape his arm over the other boy. If John will stop lying there and staring at the ceiling, he'll probably fall asleep, he figures. Dave just has to distract him from being awake. ]

[Yeah, Dave is probably going to win this round and every other round of gay chicken they may or may not have until Rose is conscious again. John really isn't feeling it.]

Not even if I say please?

[ If Dave were playing gay chicken, he'd probably be pleased with this. He's not, actually. ]

If you say please, it's not a command anymore.

[ He removes his shades with his free hand and sets them aside, his eyes already closing by the time they're out of the way. It would appear, at least, that Dave intends to sleep. ]

Oh, I suppose that's true, isn't it? Hehe. Oops.

[Meanwhile, John's glasses are staying right where they always are. He still has no intention of sleeping.]

[ Dave is still and silent for a moment. When John shows no sign of relaxing, he sighs, lifting his head again. He keeps his eyes mostly averted as he reaches out to snatch John's glasses off his face. ]

Don't sleep with your glasses on, moron.

[And he'll let them be snatched away. It's not like he really needs them, even though he doesn't plan on sleeping.]

Oh, right. Thanks. What would I do without you, Dave?
